What is the Poetree Project?

The “Poetree Project” empowers students to explore the connections between poetry, visual art, and self-expression. This workshop, targeted towards third through sixth graders, introduces poetry to young people in a fun, hands on, and interactive manner. Children participate in student-led discussions of poems highlighting figurative language and poetic devices, make connections between poetry and visual art, and create poetry and art of their own. Each workshop culminates with students creating their own poetic lines—metaphors, similes, or phrases—on leaf-shaped cutouts. These leaves are added to a collaborative poetry tree, forming a collective piece of art.
